Medieval society was divided into three unequal groups: those who prayed, the clergy, those who fought, the knights, and those who worked, that is, peasants (90% of the population) and the artisans and merchants of the burgeoning towns.
The calendars contained in books of hours, which were extremely popular at the end of the Middle Ages, give a detailed picture of daily life. These were prayer books made for rich bourgeois or royalty, and they reflect the Church's desire to regulate time.
