Two major traditions dominate representations of God in the Middle Ages in Western culture: images of Christ or God "alone," and images of the Holy Trinity.
Up through the end of the 11th century, Christian art remained cautious about showing the Trinity and manifested a preference for representing God in the figure of Christ.
