www.editions-fayard.fr Established in 1857 and integrated into the Hachette group in 1958, Libraire Arthème Fayard has earned a distinguished reputation in reference publishing in the areas of history and the human sciences. Publishing works by preeminent authors such as Jacques Le Goff (Dictionnaire raisonné de l’Occident médiéval), Georges Duby (Guillaume le Maréchal), Jean Favier (Dictionnaire de la France médiévale, Philippe le Bel, Charlemagne), and Alain Erlande-Brandenburg (La Cathédrale, De pierre, d’or et de feu), the “History” department at Fayard has long sought to make the most important scholarly contributions to the field of medieval historiography available to a broad readership. www.cic.fr By creating a foundation dedicated to the book, CIC has underscored its belief in the power of books as an incomparable vector for the creation, exchange, and transmission of knowledge. Through all its programs, the foundation seeks to bring together cultural heritage and the future, national involvement and regional influences, recreation and learning. With The Illuminated Middle Ages, the Fondation Banques CIC pour le Livre (CIC Banks Foundation for the Book) provides a brilliant illustration of these values. Together with its distinguished partner organizations--the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, the Institut de Recherche d'Histoires des Textes (IRHT; Institute for Research on the History of Texts), the Libraire Arthème Fayard et Nouveau Monde publishers, the foundation has given general audiences access to masterpieces previously available only to scholars. In this fascinating adventure of sharing knowledge by means of a book and the latest multimedia technology, the foundation is helping to provide today’s generations with the keys for understanding their own era by exploring their history and cultural heritage.
www.culture.gouv.fr Created in 1975, the Direction du Livre et de la lecture (Administration for Books and Reading) is responsible for implementing the policies on books defined by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. For more than a decade it has sought to build partnerships among entities in the public and private sectors that share a common interest in France’s written patrimony, from ancient through contemporary times. Now available, The Illuminated Middle Ages reveals several hundred previously unpublished illuminated miniatures, accompanied by commentary reflecting the most recent research and scholarship. This editorial program, in which the traditional book format is complemented by new publishing technologies, makes some of the most remarkable treasures housed in French libraries available to a broad public.
www.irht.cnrs.fr L’Institut de recherche et d'histoire des textes (IRHT; Institute for Research on the History of Texts), founded in 1937, is a separate research unit of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique - Département des Sciences de l’homme et de la société (CNRS; National Center for Scientific Research - Department of Human and Social Sciences). Based in Paris and Orleans, nearly 100 researchers are engaged in studying the history of texts from antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the humanist tradition. A particular focus is the inventorying, study, and history of the illuminated manuscript--the material form in which the written word was preserved throughout the Middle Ages.
