DVD-ROM The Illuminated Middle Ages offers an interactive journey into the medieval miniatures of manuscripts housed in municipal libraries throughout France, previously accessible only to researchers.
The images are indexed according to the city where the manuscripts are housed, period of production, theme, and key words (“Explore” section). Animated segments on ten different themes reveal the essential aspects of life in the Middle Ages (“Discover” section). The DVD also includes a discussion of the work of medievalists and an introduction to the codes of the miniatures and the art of manuscript making (“Learn” section).)
This site offers selected images and commentaries from the French-language DVD-ROM Le Moyen Âge en lumière. Only a portion of the larger collection is presented in English.
