Bust View of Figure Indicating the Text
Autun,
1250-1300
Décret, Gratien. France du Nord ?
(Autun, B.m., ms. 0080(S 99), f. 038, 80)
A line-drawing of a large figure (bust view) with wavy hair and a threatening expression erupts into the margin from the very edge of the page, almost as if he were the reader. His left index finger placed over the fingers of the right hand, he makes the distinctive gesture signifying “argument.” The gesture is apt, as the text mentions a Discors on the issue of whether the greater age of the Canon of the Apostles makes it superior to other canons. This slightly caricatural figure is not devoid of irony.
